9/11 question: Were cell phone calls from the planes possible?
posted 73 days ago by PhDinNY 73 days ago by PhDinNY +57 / -1

I've always questioned the whole "calls from the planes" part of the stories from that day. I didn't think cell phones worked when up in the air on jets, at least not back in 2001. Can anyone provide a reasonable explanation of how it could have been possible back then?

Yes they had phones built in to the seat backs. Pretty much like a car phone people had at the time.

Yes, I remember those. I think it was something like $8 for a 3-minute call (of course, if the plane you are on is being hijacked, $8 is probably worth it :) )

I believe you are referring to Airfone which did not use cell phone technology. See more below. It would not be possible to make a cell phone call from altitude. Think of how many base stations you would have to switch if your puny phone could muster the power.

Airfone was an air-ground radiotelephone service developed by MCI founder John D. Goeken, and operated under the names Airfone, GTE Airfone, and Verizon Airfone. Airfone allowed passengers to make telephone calls (later including data modem service) in-flight. Airfone handsets were often located in the middle airliner seatbacks, with two handsets per row for 6-wide coach seating configurations, and more or less depending on the aircraft layout and fare class. First class cabins typically had one handset per seat. Some planes had one or more bulkhead mounted phone stations with cordless handsets that the passengers could use, instead of the multiple wired handsets. Airfone phone calls were usually quite expensive compared to ground-based telephone calls, costing $3.99 per call and $4.99 per minute in 2006.

That would have been it. And I know cell phones didn't work cause my brother had a plane and the phones at the time kept jumping tower's back and forth.

The other problem is that the cell system flags MEIDs that look to be in two places at once, as fraud, and black lists them.

Wouldn't those be enabled/disabled from the cockpit though? I remember them not being usable at certain times like take-off and landing.

maybe if they could call from the moon in 1969...🤡

just kidding/really don't know, but kind of doubt it would work back then/didn't believe the story.

mehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i really don't think calls would have been possible...

from here https://nitter.net/PunishDem1776/status/1699164020694012052 there's a part:

For those “calls” to exist in 2001 at an average of 30k feet would be practically impossible since it would have to immediately jump from one service connector to another at rapid speeds without losing the call.......

and:

ames Fetzer did a brilliant breakdown of No Planes, BlueBeam, FBI placing evidence, the failure of cell phone calls, and so much more

The thread has links to go with both parts.

Yeah that's the real problem. Cell towers have a fairly long range but at 40,000 feet and moving at 500MPH the phone would quickly get confused from all the hopping between towers so rapidly.

Supposedly the bulk of UA93’s calls were made on the Airfones that were on planes back then. I used one a long time ago and it was a bit of a process. Only three or four of the calls from the flight were supposedly cell calls.

I was watching a video on 9/11 just weeks ago as we had quite a few posts here since it was the anniversary. This fact here struck me as odd and I hadn't heard this before. It was so odd I made a note about it. The plane(Flight 77) that had Barbara Olson, Ted Olson's wife, he was solicitor general at the time, I think. Anyway, that plane was only 30% full, here is a breakdown of the passengers,

Employees of,

BOEING

RAYTHEON

LOCKHEED MARTIN

NAVY

DEPT OF DEFENSE

AMERICAN AIRLINES

ARMY and other government agencies. That's the list, no other passengers. When I heard this, I was shocked.

Yeah I’ve studied 9/11, the employee list on the planes seems like a hit list of those they (the deep state) couldn’t trust or didn’t want. I’ve never found any evidence of what happened to them but I expect they are all dead, never to be found.

Yes. The planes were on the ground in hangers when the calls were made. The calls were what got Roth to questioning the official narrative.

… Airfone & Air One; the seat-back phones you swiped with your credit card & cost $14.99 per min /s

Each seat had a big ass phone on the back of it. I still remember them. I'd assume this would be how but I still question it all like you say.

I don't think it's even possible now, let alone then. The call connection hand-offs between towers doesn't work. Every now and then an initial connection can be made, but it only works for a brief period, certainly less than a minute.

I recall back in 2001 many airline planes had seat back airplane phones that cost way too much to use.

When they read out the names..do they include plane passengers?

permalink parent save report block reply

– FearlessMabel 2 points 73 days ago +2 / -0

And, Question #2.

Why have we never heard any calls from the planes before the hijackings took place?

Such as, "Hi Grandpa, this is Cindy. I'm calling you from an airplane." Or, "Hi Boss, I'll have those reports on your desk in the morning."

Last contacts that would have been shared with the world.

Not one.

Don't have the time to read all the texts, but, by 9/11/2001, all the airphones had been removed or disabled on the American Airlines jets. The only way mobile calls could have been made, was if the jets were still or back on the ground somewhere when the calls were made. Also, around 15 minutes into the Boston flight, whoever had control of the cockpit inadvertently made a P.A. to the passengers on the Air Traffic Control frequency. The person stated "sit down, be quiet, we're going back to the airport."

People had Nokia phones that worked on planes.

permalink save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼

How do you know? And if true, and just for Nokia, the cell phones owned by the people who supposedly made the calls could be checked, but because SO MUCH of the "official" 9/11 story doesn't add up, the cell phone calls from the planes is to be HIGHLY questioned.

I suspect the planes were remote controlled. Read up on the patten by Boeing about remote control access and how it completely blocks access from the airplane until it lands.

Cell phones worked on airplanes just fine at low altitudes and speeds. You just weren’t allowed to use them because “it would mess up the navigational equipment”.

Ok. I was wondering this same thing a couple of weeks ago. They definitively couldn't. And I remember hearing that many people started calling family members on their cell phones. However if you look it up now, it says they were dialing from those phones on the front seat. How they have all this detailed info on what was said seems suspicious. I don't buy the argument.

Nope. First call from an aircraft in the US was almost 8 to 10 years later and a big deal.

How did flight 93 people call and report that other aircraft had struck targets when they could not get news in flight? How did they know MORE than anyone on the ground at that time?

The only 3 steel building in history to fall due to fire all on the same day. 2 were 'hit by aircraft'. 1 building just had small fires. All beams were coated in asbestos.

Apparently it was going to cost many millions to deal with the asbestos problem. I don't know what problems or if it was due to potential room remodeling or other work. Anyways, another reason to take them down. Plus the billions in insurance money.
