My dad was born in 1918 in Pennsylvania. He said it was a melting pot of immigrants back then with immigrants moving near to and living by others like themselves, with a healthy suspicion of others. The Italians lived over here, the Irish over there, the Hungarians over there, etc. He said when he was a young man and dating, all the youth from all the different groups would be at the live music dances which were very popular. He said that the Polish girls were the most attractive of all the girls, but their brothers stood by to make sure they only fraternized with Polish men. Dad was Irish, and sadly, he wasn't allowed to ask one to dance, but he did end up with a good-looking Romanian gal, so it all worked out!
My Polish ancestors (my mother's side) are proud.
