It's been a subculture for as long as humans have been civilized. Ancient Rome had sex confused folks even then, even had bordellos that catered to that particular perversion. It's old enough to have been mentioned in the Bible:

Deuteronomy 22:5 "A woman must not put on men's clothing, and a man must not wear women's clothing. Anyone who does this is detestable in the sight of the LORD your God. English Standard Version "A woman shall not wear a man's garment, nor shall a man put on a woman's cloak, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD your God."

So it is an ancient as written language, but seems to show up in spades at times of crisis and war... like we are in now.
