The area of Kosovo and Serbia has basically been in a hot war since the rise of Islam. They are at the crossroads between the Muslim world and Europe. During the Middle Ages armies regularly crossed this area. Vlad the Impaler gets his reputation from trying to defend his small country of Wallachia from both the Ottomans and the Hungarians.
