Hamas knew their attack would result in the slaughter of Gaza civilians. It had to have been puppeted by people who didn't care.

I think Israel knew if they left the border undefended for a few hours Hamas would do something stupid. I don't think they knew the details of what Hamas would do. They would just sacrifice some Israelis living near Gaza and claim beheaded babies.
