"There is some debate about what powers the speaker pro tempore has under the rule, but it says plainly that the person's primary responsibility is to oversee the House's election of a new speaker."
I like this point though:
"In the absence of a speaker, the House of Representatives has gone dormant. No bills have come up for a vote. New pieces of legislation are not being sent to committee for consideration. And while the world is looking to the United States for decisive action, the prospects for electing a new speaker right now"
Gotta love it. Note: commentary via NYT so do with it what you will.
It makes no sense to appoint an interim speaker if all they can do is conduct a vote for a Speaker. What's the point? They already have that with the pro tem position. I'm willing to wait for the dust to settle but I think the NYT analysis of the situation is wrong.
Good point. What it seems to me is 1) this is perfect to keep the house from doing much of anything, think declare war or sent more us tax dollars out of the country
Or 2) McHenry is a Rino and his powers will be expanded so Pelosi et al. can still call the shots
Serving as interim, what's that mean in the normal sense of the word?
