This just helps convince people who were on the fence, coming over, that it's nonsense. This doesn't help. Sure, he might not admit it. But saying nothing is preferable. One of the biggest, most visible advocates in the past disavows? Spinning this to be the opposite is a terrible take.
I'm not sure how to explain other than this. Disinformation is real... on both sides.
