I had a similar thing happen to me on the ship I served on, BUT, the reason was a brand new captain took command of the ship-Captain LaRoque-who went to the crews mess to taste of our fare; it was a tradition that new crew members were often subject to the Providence trots and the poor Captain was really sick for a week or two. He put the entire supply dept on restriction untill the disease carriers were found and treated. a couple months later, he treated the crew and their dependents to a filet mignon and lobster by candlelight dinner. He went on to be an admiral but the crew would have followed him to helland back... 😎
