The South was Lincoln’s honeypot. He couldn’t lose his golden goose and was willing to sacrifice countless lives to keep up the tariff grift.

Also, Lincoln was not technically assassinated. The South had not yet surrendered; only the Army of Northern Virginia. The war was not officially over yet so he was still a legal target of opportunity.
