False. Mechanical ventilation worsened symptoms from the virus, but initially we had no way of knowing this. Initially thinking it was a lung tissue disease like ARDS we treated it as such, later when we realised it was a vascular problem and the vents were damaging lung tissue management changed to anticoagulation and permissive hypoxia. The virus and it's effects killed people, more so than vents alone
