Looking for the name of the letter that derailed any “alternative” approaches to medicine, essentially giving allopathic medicine a monopoly.
🧐 Research Wanted 🤔
The letter is US specific and was published in the late 1800’s or early 1900’s. I believe it was specifically focused on medical schools, and I believe the dude’s name started with “P”.
Thanks in advance.
I don't know about any "letter" of which you speak, but it was the "Flexner Report" that rated all non-allopathic medical schools poorly and effectively unable to receive financial grants from Rockefeller. This process occurred in the 1910-1930ish time frame. Eventually, medical schools either switched to allopathy to receive the grants or fell from grace and all but a tiny few ultimately shut down.
That’s it! No wonder I couldn’t find it. 1000 thank you’s fren.
Early on John D Rockefeller funded the founding medical schools in the US. As he was interested in additional uses for oil (petroleum is the base stock for many organic molecules), he mandated that medical schools specifically NOT provide any education on homeopathic remedies, nor address the impact of nutrition on health; doctors were to provide pharmaceutical and surgical solutions only.
Marking this to come back and check later.
Honestly I think there's much more than just one letter, even if there's a good central one to kick it off way back when. For example the organization that accredited osteopaths was recently (as in "over the last few decades" recently, and not all at once) taken over / merged / acquired by the AMA-run ACGME (accreditation council for graduate medical education) because it was becoming too prevalent and legitimate with a better philosophy. Similar movements of health (chiropractors and others) have popped up and been squashed in one way or another over the years.
