To be honest, it skeeves me out a bit to think of any religion having an impact on laws that people are expected to follow.
And I'm not even one of these full on anti Christian type of atheists. Let people believe what they want but once you start trying to spill over and dictate to EVERYBODY it may be time to cool it down a bit.
And what do you think the vast majority of our laws are based on? Moral & ethical standards we all agreed on - because they were given to us by the Bible, by God. Not only our laws, your very own worldview. Do you think lying is wrong? What about stealing and murdering? What about respecting your parents, working hard and being kind to others? These values don't just come from nowhere.
Without God you have no values, no principles, no morals and no ethics. Just empty nihilism where the strong dominate the weak.
I assume it's something fundamental for survival. Same reason packs of animals don't turn on and kill one another. Obviously it wouldn't make sense to kill off your own kind, etc. I don't see any indication it's a god of any kind.
Every individual's values influences their politics. Just because some values are influenced by a religious dogma does not make them less valid than values influenced by non-religious dogmas. The argument that a chosen policy position is invalidated because of religious influence has been a bigoted leftist tactic for a century. Besides, Leftism is a much more irrational and intolerant dogma than any current mainstream religion anyway.
