High cholesterol may indicate that there is heart disease present, but it is there because it is trying to fix the heart problems (cholesterol and calcium combine to make scabs on damaged areas). The cholesterol isn't the cause of heart disease, it is the result of the body trying to heal itself.
High cholesterol can indicate a whole host of health problems. Believe it or not, the most common cause of high cholesterol is low thyroid activity, but doctors almost always ignore thyroid issues until the thyroid is completely dead and you have to take their daily drugs. Instead of saying, "hey, your thyroid is sluggish, start taking iodine" they say "Oh, you are at risk of heart disease. Take more drugs!"
