I was in 5th grade Catholic school. Priest announced everyone into church. We could barely hear a radio in the sacristy. Priest started prayers. Soon after he left the altar, changed into black vestments and started prayers for the dead. Those of us who understood what was happening did cry; those who didnt understand made fun of us until they found out. Priest told us JFK was killed, school dismissed, go home and pray.
About 50 years later a young man asked me about that day and I told him this, getting choked up, eyes welling up. He asked me if it was that emotional. I told him it was like the whole nation was crying. Stores closed, only thing on the 3 tv stations was coverage of the events until after the funeral. You didnt even see kids on the streets playing, everyone was glued to the tv.
All those pictures you see (LBJ swearing in, coffin too big and difficult to transport, the eulogy, even Oswald being shot) we all saw as it happened.
AND YET Daddy Bush though he was pictured standing against a building in Dallas claimed he didnt remember where he was on that day.
