Before the industrial revolution families were together almost all of the time. Men and women both worked the land and shared in the social fabric.
The industrial society separated families by sending husbands to work, children to school and wives isolated in their homes, becoming more and more bored and irritated. Women were always the ones hurt the most by modern capitalist developments.
