Canola did not exist 50 years ago, back then, there was only rapeseed oil. Furrther back to the early 1900s it was used as a machine lubricant and was toxic to humans if ingested. What is NOT commonly known is that CANOLA (Canada <can> Oil <ola>) is actually RAPESEED that was the first GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISM GMO, to be successfully marketed commercially as an edible oil. The rapeseed plant was genetically modified to remove the toxins that rapeseed oil normally contained and thereby made the oil a so-called ?SAFE? product for human consumption. Genetically modified in the late 1970s where Canola became readily available as an alternate crop in 1980 and beyond. This new GMO rapeseed could no longer be called rapeseed as that would have been illegal, so they had to come up with a new name, they created a quite innocent sounding name and called it Canola. I learned this in my early years in College when I studied Plant Genetics. The funny thing is that very few people know that Canola is actually a GMO, and as such, are buying many products that contain this very unhealthy oil and are none the wiser. Food processors use it because its so cheap. The important point here is how far Monsanto has gone to coverup the fact that Canola is a GMO. If consumers knew the truth, it could really damage the Canola oil industry. My two cents.
