I think that a very large majority of them ABSOLUTELY knew what they were doing, but found a way to talk or think their way through it - that it wasn't their fault and/or responsibility. I think they also feared for their own future and that what they had done (or not done) will come back and haunt them BIG TIME. This would be a perfect time for them to seek forgiveness and a new life in Jesus Christ†. They will be held accountable for their sins (we all will), but they have their eternity to worry about. Seek Jesus†.
