Question was what should the law do to treat the situation of a 12-year old girl who wants to be a boy. She said "I think the law should stay out of it, and that the parents should handle it."

I'm no fan of Nikki, but this comment is not wrong. Right now the current combination of laws and school policies are getting in the way of parents' rights to manage their childrens' lives.
