I started singing late in life...
I'm unable to learn the normal way with lip burbles and scales etc... My strategy is to attempt a wide variety of songs and that helps a lot.
Singing is all about breathing and loosening facial muscles etc... In the days before electric lights they would hold a lit candle close to their mouth and preactive lip trills and burbles without blowing the candle out. It doesn't take as much are as people try to use in order to sing.
Interesting what you said about using a candle. I have heard from others saying that singing is about breathing also.
I can vouch for the candle method.
Absolutely works to help learn breath control for singing, even in a post electronic lights world.
