I don't think that it's a myth but I question how inflated the numbers are and how you're not allowed to discuss that only certain groups of Jews were targeted as well as the involvement of Jews like Soros who profited from it (he was far from the only one.) The modern myth that Jews are a monolithic single tribe needs to be destroyed to get to the rest of the truth.
Yep. My great grandmother moved from Germany before the war. She is 1/2 Jewish. She was worried that something would happen, but none of her family was in concentration camps or discriminated against. I heard it was because they lived in a rural area but this could be another reason.
We had lots of POW's working on the farm and helped out a bit with them because we knew German. All the POW's we saw were 12-15. Those people had stories about ordinary people disappearing. Classmates or neighbors who said the wrong thing just vanishing.
People don't realize that Germany was at a strong disadvantage. They had to go to extreme measures to survive.
Some of those vanishings were people being drafted. Some were people being taken to slave camps. Some were people fleeing.
I think those disappearances were to slave camps or failed attempts to flee cause they weren't found after the war.
Also I don't think they were drafted. The kids were into Hitler youth and most were ok with going to fight. They would have warning and tell their friends they were going. Then before getting a gun surrender to Americans to become a burden on us. Literally one of my grandpa's always says he volunteered because he was sick of working so hard, we were fun he worked two days a week.
Disappearances also kicked off a very strong and convenient message through rumor: "Stand against the regime and you're next."
