AC isnt rare in the northern States. Maybe in 1975 it was but not now. Every home built in the last 40 years has central air.
That maybe,I lived in an area up north, wear no one had it and very few new homes were built. The bigger cities were they are expanding have it I guess.
I can't speak for all regions but I had a house in the UK and I installed aircon in the south-facing office, which was otherwise too hot in summer and too cold in winter.
Here in southern Greece I have aircon in every room including the workshop; again for both cooling and heating.
