Have a random question for fellow dog owners. What is a good brand of preventative that won't break the bank?
Ideally, I'm trying to find one that is flea, tick, and heart worm prevention. I think I remember that some medicines could possibly do more harm than good, so I thought I'd put the question to people more likely to be aware of such things.
My dog has been through the wringer with complications from meds and vaccines, cancer and at this point I just don’t use anything for flea and tick except this stuff called Avon Skin so Soft Bug Guard Plus Picaridin Liquid Repellent with Pump Spray. You can get it at most stores and pharmacies or online. I started using it a couple years ago and no fleas or ticks. My mom recommended it-she used to use it on us for mosquito prevention in its original form (I guess Avon has made it for many years.) It smells pretty good.
I just don’t have a great answer though because I’m not sure how effective it is against heartworm but if the bugs aren’t biting, I suppose no heartworm. She gets checked annually and no problems. Heartgard prevention made her super sick. Everything seems to make her sick though now. Good luck, I should try some of the ideas mentioned here as well.
It's also available through amazon, at a higher cost, and the product has loads of positive reviews going back years. Only a minor chance of allergies to what's in it, as in only one person out of hundreds mentioned any issues.
Later on, I'll be diving back into researching for natural methods for guarding against heart worms. There's also something similar to this for cats that I saw in my search.
Research what herbs might help heart worm. I'm not sure if any herbs will help fleas. I'll see if I can find something. Be careful buying "natural" products for animals. Just like food isn't regulated or tested neither is topical products for animals. Many of these companies use essential oils that I know isn't extremely toxic to dogs and cats. Stay away from tea tree, lemongrass and anything very strong like those oils. Tea tree can kill a dog.
