I might be inclined to say that giving the perception of being unarmed as you open the door is probably the safest bet because who knows if someone is going to throw a fit and accuse you of brandishing, even if you're just carrying in a hip holster in your own home.
Clearly the age old paranoia of "one hand behind the door, gun in hand" is the way to go!
