If the diamond was loose, then cannot use it. I heard of someone trading their diamond earing for rice or cup of sugar. Cambodia as a very rich country in terms of precious stones so some of the people have them.
It just doesn't make sense to me how something that cannot heal, hydrate, or fill your stomach can have value when medicine, food and water are the only things that matter.
