That defense went out in Nuremberg. "I was only following orders" in not an excuse to commit treason.

"Following Orders" is never acceptable, no matter the line of work whether it be Federal Agents committing Treason and Sedition or a Cook at a Restaurant shorting an order because the boss wants to save money while up-charging the meal. Yes, those are widely different in scope, but no less reprehensible on a scruples/morality level.
They committed treason against the United States, the only remedy is this.

How do you know which parts were real and which were show?
Unless the PEADs are released, we may never know. The whole thing could have been staged and kept classified for decades.
