I believe these tunnels exist in all major cities. There are so many urban legends of people/kids disappearing in places like malls, pubs, museums etc. I am sure a lot of these originated because of these.

It's gotten bad. While I was visiting my parents earlier this year an 8 year girl was abducted right off the street walking with her mother.
