Part 4 of Europa the last battle seems to say he was actually trying to make Germany Great Again after the war, getting off banks and cleaning up the country etc. Thats why he was so beloved by the german populace.

Maybe because history is written by the victors and he lost, thats why they painted himto be the ultimate baddie etc. Interesting food for thougth!
