Why is it so hard for me, someone who qualifies for the O1 Visa, to get into the US, but so easy for illegal immigrants to cross the border and get in?

I've just been drilled about every little thing I can do, own and will do and everything hangs by a thin thread. But for some reason, if I just hiked my ass across Panama and Mexico, I could just.. get in?!

Our friends from England had to go back even though they wanted to stay back in 2008 time frame. They were self-employed but apparently that wasn't sufficient for them to stay. It was so bizarre. Meanwhile, in Texas....
