Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evoloving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
I thought you all should know that years ago I attended some seminars and they really influenced me although I never got involved in the organization. They were called the institute in basic life principles. Turns out that’s what the Dugger family was into and it’s definitely a cult.
I never knew it was and certainly wasn’t a member but I did follow similar principles in my family. It really influenced my sister in laws who have so many kids and obeyed their parents with such devotion it scared me. We are oldest so married and moved first and got less into the Mormonesque life style. Plus we were into rock music and a bit of weed. Rebels secretly.
The documentary was called Shiny Happy People and some of it is on YT.
Was anyone else in this movement? Something similar?
I’m processing.
I wasn’t into that or anything similar. My daughter watched the duggars and I have seen many episodes because I was usually in the room. I don’t mean to criticize you or anyone influenced by this. I always thought it was just weird and wrong. Maybe because I,ve always been a rebel and questioned everything. As a small child I was always told my middle name was “but” & “why”. My mom said when I was in elementary school I argued with her about the clothes she had taken out for me. I could see some of my family members believing every word. Also, these type organizations have leaders that are very talented at persuasion. Even the smartest people can be tricked. I think because deep down we all are seeking guidance and acceptance. My personal belief is that’s from God so we will seek him but not everyone does or fights God and seeks other groups that seem like Christianity.
I did watch the documentary and it’s horrible how the women and young girls were treated. I’m not a feminist but believe women deserve respect and can make their own choices. Training the boys to rape young girls and to rule women is almost as bad.
