You know when I grew up, I did not know Jews were any different from anyone else, they were just people.
I was taught to respect people, that the way you treat other people says more about who you are than who they are. So telling a joke aimed at a particular group of people was just a joke that went more to the condition, situation, disposition of a person/people and not to the flesh and blood of people as individuals or group. There were no cruel jokes, because they were just jokes with no malice intended.
