Marx saw socialism as the phase where the government would control everything until a communal society could be acheived, and the "state would wither away."
Of course, it was always a pipe dream.
The "national socialism" of the Germans, OTOH, had a different meaning and context.
"Nationalsim" was a nation of people who are related by blood (similar to what the Japanese have, or the Vietnamese, or the Nigerians, etc. -- most nations around the world).
"Socialism" was this nation of related people standing together in one society, where they would look out for each other.
It was not a social welfare state.
It was not a government owns and controls everything sort of Marxist idea.
It was a "look out for your brother" kind of idea. Do what is best for yourself, but also keep in mind you should do what is best for your people.
