Yes, drives me crazy. Life is impossible without CO2! In an oxygen only world, we all die.
In low CO2 environments, hemoglobin releases CO2 and binds with O2 (the Haldane effect). In high CO2 environments, hemoglobin releases O2 and binds with CO2 (the Bohr effect). Thus O2 is brought from the lungs to the cells where it can be burned. If the CO2 at the cells is too low, the O2 will not be released.
