NATO causes wars, it doesn't prevent them. Additionally, the concept of any NATO country crossing the Atlantic to defend the US is laughable. None of them have the will or the ability regardless of any treaty. Russia isn't even the rabid monster that they've been portrayed to be anyway. NATO has no purpose like you said and it needs to be dissolved.
NATO seems like an outfit whose mission disappeared (when the Soviet Union fell) and is now desperately seeking a reason to keep on existing.
