What states/counties don’t allow you to vote for different parties during the primaries?
🧐 Research Wanted 🤔
I can’t get a good google search and swear there were areas that restricted your primary to the registerd party only
According to the GPTs . . .
In the United States, primary elections are held by political parties to select their candidates for the upcoming general elections. There are different types of primaries:
Closed Primaries: Only voters registered with a given party can vote in that party's primary.
Open Primaries: Voters can choose on election day which party's primary they want to participate in, regardless of their registered party affiliation.
Semi-Closed Primaries: Unaffiliated voters can participate in the primary of the party of their choice, but voters who are registered with a party may only vote in that party's primary.
Top-Two Primaries: All candidates appear on the same ballot, regardless of party, and all voters can vote for any candidate; the top two finishers then move on to the general election.
States with closed primaries do not allow you to vote for different parties during the primaries. As of my last update in April 2023, examples of states with closed primaries included:
Arizona (although independents may choose which primary to vote in)
Delaware
Florida
Kansas (for Republicans; Democrats have semi-closed)
Kentucky
Maine (for Republicans; Democrats have semi-closed)
Nevada
New Jersey
New Mexico
New York
Oregon
Pennsylvania
Maryland's primaries (both parties) are closed. Independent voters cannot vote during the primaries. It's irritating because there are almost as many unaffiliated voters as there are GOP voters in MD, hence the reason our state can claim it's 2-to-1 Democrat. Just pick a side and have some say in the process.
