I can’t get a good google search and swear there were areas that restricted your primary to the registerd party only

Did that change recently? I thought Idaho was an open primary state.

2012 was the first year of closed primary for the GOP. Democrats are still trying to change it back so that they can influence Republican candidates, even though they say they do not do that. Sorry for the npr link, but here is an article from back in the day of change if you are interested.
