So the word virus has no meaning, it's just a name for "something causing something to happen"
Why do we say posts go "viral" online? It just means something that spreads rapidly. In this case the "virus", the thing that spread rapidly, was the idea that there really was a pathogen that was making people sick.
I remember when I first learned about viruses by reading an encyclopedia as a kid. It didn't make sense to me how something like that could arise naturally - not quite dead, not quite alive. It all makes sense now.
