She should get her attorney involved STAT. Years ago, as an RN who was naive, I witnessed this threat several times by the pediatric staff and nurse practitioner. At some point the hospital must have got our legal department involved and as of 2016 patients who did not want the Hep. B vax given in the hospital had to sign a release. Also part of the prenatal lab panel includes a maternal hepatitis B level as negative or positive. We now know having DCFS involved results in questionable placement and tracking of children, would separate mom/baby impacting maternal bonding and breastfeeding. If mom has chosen to breastfeed and separation results in formula feeding, this can impact the gut microbiome resulting in lifetime allergies, medical issues and potential (in extreme cases) anaphylactic shock from formula. Formula is a bunch of chemicals invented after studies on rats. Your baby is not a rat. Parents should hold firm. Mother should breastfeed and be given a room on the postpartum unit until this is resolved with current or former hepatitis results. This stance by the hospital can set them up for a lawsuit up until the child is 18 yo and beyond. Document everything: names of the doctors and nurse, any hospital lawyers involved. Get a copy of everything and anything signed. If recording anything by phone, clearly state you want to and are recording everything. Get a different pediatrician post discharge. The baby is in your custody, and you have a right to refuse any and all care. You should be able to sign the baby out AGAINST MEDICAL ADVICE (AMA). Have them put it in writing the reason they refuse to do so. This could be considered medical kidnapping. I am not a lawyer, but a prior observing RN.
