In general, we Americans are not keen on deep historical discussions. But I think that Putin's historical background on Ukraine and Russia is important to put the entire matter in context. I thought his discussion of the historical precedents was very interesting, and it gave us his point of view. Sadly, when this interview gets cut up into palatable pieces for people with short attention spans, most of this segment will be cut down to 20-second soundbites.
