I think it goes back even further than Lincoln. Andrew Jackson was a lot like Trump, and they did not want him as President. Especially when they found he was a patriot that refused to sell out. He fought the bankers and won, although, nearly assassinated multiple times.
Lincoln was serving their interests when he started The War Between the States. They had to destroy State Sovereignty and Rights in order to move their plan forward. Slavery was a convenient excuse, even though it was already dying out, as our Founding Fathers knew it would. That is why they did not address slavery directly, because they knew it was already dying out naturally, and addressing it during the founding of the Republic would have been too many radical changes in an already radical revolution.
Although Andrew Jackson was successful against the cabal, that victory was undone by Lincoln. I think the assassination of Lincoln was tying up loose ends.
