Holy Father, our neighborsleft delighted after yesterday’s lunch and we then tidied the house and drove back to our cosy Swiss flat. Little did we know the heating was out of orderand the flat temperature had significantly dropped. Then, by Your Mercy, there still is hot water and it’s not freezing so, we can survive until the zealous Swiss technicians who professionally took our call at 08:00 intervene and fix what we need them to. In an old « Calvin & Hobbes » comic, Calvin’s father tells him he loves a Spartan holiday as it makes every normal work day feel like luxury. Well, we went from a fresh house to a fresher flat so the kinda Spartan week was just introductory to our return to work. I praise You for keeping me humorous in such situations.

Today we celebrate Lucy Yi Zhenmei.

In 1862, she went with Jean-Pierre Néel, a missionary priest of Paris Foreign Missions Society, to start a mission in Jiashanlong, but just then the administrator of Guizhou Province, Tian Xingshu, began to stir up hatred against Christians, with the support of the local magistrate. As a result, John Zhang Tianshen, Martin Wu Xuesheng, John Chen Xianheng and Néel were all imprisoned and sentenced to death without a formal trial. On February 18, the day of their execution, they encountered Yi Zhenmei on the road. She was also jailed and put on trial that very day and sentenced to death, because she refused to renounce her faith. The following day at noon, February 19, 1862, she was beheaded. Brave believers took the bodies of all five martyrs to Liuchonnguan Seminary grounds for burial.
