The Founders of our Republic knew beyond a certainty that humans are frail and cannot be trusted. They wrote the Constitution with that idea in mind, that's why there are so many checks and balances. To wit:
“If Men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and the next place, oblige it to control itself.” ― James Madison
Sure, but it's also going to create a lot of selfishness which is not great.
It's a shame that it was taken to this point, but you can only exploit people for so long before it ruins it for everyone.
