I'm a 1960s kid. The first thing that came to mind when I saw the title was Bob Seger:
Feel Like a Number
I take my card and I stand in line To make a buck I work overtime Dear Sir letters keep coming in the mail I work my back till it's racked with pain The boss can't even recall my name I show up late and I'm docked It never fails I feel like just another Spoke in a great big wheel Like a tiny blade of grass In a great big field
To workers I'm just another drone To Ma Bell I'm just another phone I'm just another statistic on a sheet To teachers I'm just another child To IRS I'm another file I'm just another consensus on the street Gonna cruise out of this city Head down to the sea Gonna shout out at the ocean Hey it's me
And I feel like a number Feel like a number Feel like a stranger A stranger in this land I feel like a number I'm not a number I'm not a number Dammit I'm a man I said I'm a man
Gonna cruise out of this city Head down to the sea Gonna shout out at the ocean Hey it's me [Chorus] And I feel like a number Feel like a number Feel like a stranger A stranger in this land I feel like a number I'm not a number I'm not a number Dammit I'm a man I feel like a number Feel like a number Feel like a number
Nice, but this came first. Then the Iron Maiden covers, Rush references, this, the Simpsons episode, an episide of the kids' cartoon Reboot ("Number Seven"), Bester's salute in Babylon 5, and countless other honorifics and tips of the hat.
If you can get through an episode without saying "Hey, that's what they're doing now..." you weren't watching.
Kind of what NotinFormation was referring too, as more a child of the 80's, I go straight to Iron Maiden.
Iron Maiden was good. I go back before the Beatles. But my first real hit was "Hot Smoke and Sassafras" by "The Bubble Puppy." Yes, I was a head banger at one time but I got over it. It is amazing what the military does to you back in the 70s.
