My late father, a former political prisoner in ex-Yugoslavia, taught us never to believe in propaganda. Everytime we were watching the news, he was yelling at the anchor for lying and boldly misinterpret situations. When my teachers asked me to explain why my father had been in jail, I was told to answer « because he was not a communist »…
So, I had my eyes stapled open as soon as I got my Dad back, in 1976 (I was then 6 and had not been seeing him since I was 6 months old, except once in jail with my Mum in 1975).

Well, that’s another story, I was the youngest of 5 living (somewhere between the girls and my older bro there was a brother who sadly passed on his birthday. Never knew him). Then as the Russian said: « You leave our gulags either dead or mad ». Dad was a genius and has been actively involved in the secession, then creation of the Croatian state, from his return from jail to the mid 90s… And I had my ass kicked many times by that perfectionist, sometime for bringing an A- from school… mostly for being outspoken, which was described as insolent by my teachers.
I once worked with a guy who grew up in East Germany and he was the most virulently small-government resist-all-spying type I've ever met to this day, even at places like here!
First hand experience if you survive it will set someone as rabidly against the ideology that destroyed their home state or community as anything ever will. I'm overjoyed your father also was a survivor and bought his children up knowing a thing or two.
