The Chinese are the masters of back engineering. They would come over to America and take tours of our factories, namely our computing related factories. They would wear gumshoe soles on their shoes to pick up anything that was on the floor, like resistors and chips, etc. They would take these back to China to figure out how we made them and then make the cheap China version to undersell us. It worked. Damn near everything is made in China.
