Don't buy printers that use ink cartridges (inkjet printers). They're cheaper up front but much more expensive.
Laser printers cost more because toner cartridges won't dry up and last much longer. The majority of the money the manufacturers make is on the initial hardware sale.
eh .. .except for the new HP printers. However, you would need a firmware outside of HP to be on the safe-side. This way, you can use nice equipment without divulging personal information or be in a killing contract with big tech.
Another solution is to really assess the need for paper trails and how these can be established. Writing things is a way to go.
Yeah my laser printer cartridge lasts two years, about $75 to replace - if we need something printed in color we go to office max and pay something like $0.02 a page
