Well, there might be a silver lining here.

150 years ago, when America was strong, politicians were citizen-statesmen, and the sheep were not (literally) shaking, Central America was a mess. To fix it, the US would periodically send in the marines, beat the shit out of the local inhabitants, thus restoring peace and goodwill.

I don't see us getting back to those good times anytime soon, but, I've been wrong before.
