France has already supplied mercenaries to Ukraine, and informally supplied French leadership / military advisors. Everyone involved knows this.

If France deploys 2,000 soldiers in Ukraine, it is obviously an escalation, a formal entry into direct confrontation with Russia for both France and NATO.
There are already French soldiers and bases in Romania and Moldova that may also be used to support any conflict in Western Ukraine. That would make Romania and Moldova, both NATO members since 2004, direct targets of Russia.
