This is very exciting to see that organically these schools have arisen out of a need to have sane education practices for children. People have so much more power to self-determine than they think.
According to Maria Montessori and Charlotte Mason, children have a natural inclination to learn, just like when they are tired they will naturally fall asleep. There is no need to force learning when you provide a rich environment. Children's minds have been captured by outside forces...think electronics... in today's world, but children and learning are very organic and truly it fits like a hand and glove.
What public schools teach is garbage in then garbage out for exams...that is not learning by any stretch of the imagination. This movement is a blessing to families that find it difficult to homeschool but, recognizing the absolute dismal failure of public schools, is seeking an alternative...this is how movements are born organically...out of necessity.
I homeschooled for over 10 years in the 80's and 90's and we were highly organized with a support group, outside teachers arranged for special subjects, art and choirs and many other learning opportunities.
In the 80's with likeminded families we had organized a food co-op with about 20 families, a babysitting co-op, a play group and a home school support group that actually created events that brought in vendors and speakers to support and educate parents. It was a very rich, profitable experience for all...it can be done. It was all quite exciting....
We just interviewed at one in WV. Principal said within 3 weeks of opening they had an army of Indignant Dept. Of Education and public safety bureaucrats rushing in demanding all manner of bullshit forms and approvals. It's so new they hadn't even heard of it. And such rancor and contempt. Disgusting. We're homeschooling, and the state legislators are still jerking us around on the Hope scholarship which would pay $5,000 / year tuition for us.

They are correct. I like Montessori; they used to have some good schools in Portland area.
