I live in rural SE NC. When I first moved here just over ten years ago there were still quite a few cotton farms along the main roads. Now they are growing soy or corn.
I live in that area. We still have a few farms around us that grow cotton in the late summer/early fall. There are always white puffs in the roads in October. I'm sad to read that it's a dying business. This country is losing everything good to the plastic strip mall convenience mentality.
