I think it is proof that the President respects Jewish and Biblical history. The ark is supposed to be the holy of holies and is a symbol of God's promise that he would send a savior to save us from sin. When in Jewish possession, it was always behind a curtain, but that curtain was ripped in half once Jesus died on the cross.
